Non Invasive Prenatal Testing – Screening
When you’re pregnant, your blood contains fragments of your baby’s DNA. The Nipt Test is a type of test that analyses this DNA in a sample of your blood to assess the risk of:
- Down syndrome (trisomy 21)
- Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18)
- Patau syndrome (trisomy 13)
- The baby’s gender will also be confirmed
Conventional screening will detect approximately 70-80% of pregnancies with Down syndrome. The Nipt test will detect over 99%. The Nipt test has a false positive rate of less than 0.1% compared to the 5% with conventional screening. This means that the screening test detects more pregnancies with Down syndrome but also reduces the risk of unnecessary amniocentesis.
Testing includes scan images and a simple blood test.
